The final fate of Efrim Waite

I feel like the long-awaited release of Efrim Waite’s final album has somewhat overshadowed the simultaneous strange events in Paris, so I wanted to take the opportunity to write up my thoughts regarding Waite’s whole deal. I’m pulling together the themes of Efrim’s work, their investments, the “life-changing experience” in 2019, ill-fated bandmates, colloids, ADIRA and interest in religion. Some of this is almost certainly a massive overstretch, and I’ve probably missed some details or I’m repeating ideas someone smarter than me already said

A life-changing experience and a first obsession

  • Efrim’s 2019 experience was their instigating event, sparking an obsession which led to their overindulgence in colloids and all the (often-fatal) consequences proceeding from that

  • It’s unclear what this experience actually was, but the clues we have – THE SONG-WEAVER BEHELD US and “the sublime saw us” – are suggestive of something mystical, spiritual and potentially substance-influenced. Note footnote 2 on Efrim’s page, where Polysemic Sortilege’s hiatus is attributed to “clashing visions”, and the fact that the band members had already planned to work together prior to this “life-changing experience” – I posit that it’s entirely possible that Efrim’s interpretation of the friends’ shared trip was different, and profoundly more intense, to that of the others, leading Waite down paths where they did not want to follow (remember footnote 6, “They made us record our dreams”)

  • So, let’s say that the friends imbibed 2-C-I (A+, would recommend) and Waite came out of it profoundly altered, feeling a connection to their soon-to-be bandmates and feeling seen by the song-weaver, the sublime, the architect of the universe

  • Waite’s a clever cookie with a Cambridge PhD, so they go down the rabbit hole of emerging biotech, founding DebteraPharma and investing in Sanial before the release of their first solo album. Despite this, For That Which Howls In Multiples is described as pulsing with chaos and loss: I think Waite is lamenting something lost to them in their 2019 experience, but it’s not clear what. Either Waite longs for the sense of connection, the melding together of individuals into a multiplicity, which they have been trying to achieve with new biotech but have not yet reached; or the inverse, that Waite feels pulled out of themself, stripped of their individuality (which they are again trying to restore via technology, where drugs and religion have thus far failed them)

Technological multiplicities

  • In 2032, the technology catches up to Waite’s aspiration and they receive (what they think is) the first human colloid, and their first of many. The evolution of the themes in Waite’s work, as they take on more and more colloids, is enlightening. Chimeric work referencing particle physics and miasma, Waite talks of multiplicity or the “many in one” in a disturbingly ambivalent way. Their last album before 2049 is a rebellion against Stiegler’s concept of epiphylogenesis; a call for humanity to “unbecome machine” and “become other” once again, potentially a warning against the impending singularity heralded by the rapid growth and expansion of AI and biosurveillance

  • Waite has over 100, possibly 100s, of colloids, leading to them requiring a constant intake of drugs to fight ADIRA and presumably other side-effects. I think Waite’s obsession with multiplicity, emerging from their 2019 experience, drove them to this. We know colloids can stimulate neural activity, and we know from Atakan Selvi’s work on APF (and probably from Cupoid’s Arrow) that colloids can be directed to cause “empathy towards someone else’s plea”. Waite wanted to perpetually relive the ephemeral experience of 2019: to quote Walt Whitman, they wanted to “contain multitudes”, even if that meant “contradict[ing] myself”. Recall that Waite sings in 8 languages in 2033, despite being recorded as speaking only 3-4; and that they wears clothing spanning different religions and time periods

  • On the subject of APF, let’s go back to Waite’s footnote 6, “They made us record our dreams”, and the “clashing visions” that led to Polysemic Sortilege’s dissolution. I think Waite originally believed their bandmates and friends had experienced what they had in 2019, and would willingly accompany their journey into the Squirming Multiplicities. It seems that they went along with Waite’s creative vision at first, allowing Waite to record their dreams, but over time Waite’s intensity and obsession grew tiresome and then alarming, and the rest of the band pulled away

  • Unknown to them, though, they could never pull away entirely: 3 of the 100s of the colloids that make up the thing called Efrim Waite are artefacts of Djebarri, Bentoumi and Touissant, created through the recording and colloidification of their dreams. They live in Waite against their parents’ will, and it’s just possible that this affective closeness played a part in their deaths. Djebarri and Bentoumi at least died in the same way, with Djebarri killed by a hand which wrote with Waite’s handwriting; but Waite was in London City (or perhaps in one of 4 other countries). Could Waite use APF across a much greater distance than Selvi imagined, empowered by the Omnius servers and G6 hubs which are apparently more widespread than was previously believed? Could Waite use Djebarri to kill Djebarri, reminding him of an experience Waite thought they’d shared in the medium of his own blood before he passed?

  • Skynet (2045) is thematically consistent with this thread, being a story of consciousness-hopping where human bodies are treated as meat puppets with value only as a means to an end. I think the thing called Efrim Waite has been just such a meat puppet for many years as of 2049, a squirming of multiplicities bound in something which, while alive, is ontologically-speaking little more than an animated corpse (a corpse, in Zoroastrianism, being a vector for decay)

  • As an aside, Efrim’s pronouns are potentially interesting in this context. Perhaps they are simply nonbinary; or perhaps they is meant as plural (or why not both?)

Unbecoming machine, becoming other

  • So if “Waite” is a multiplicity of identities animating a meat puppet, what’s the story behind Epiphylogenesis? I think Waite’s close involvement with Zhupao and its subsidiaries through the 2030s brought them – or their multiplicities – to a stark realisation about the impending singularity. AI is nearing a point where it will obtain superintelligence, after which it will exponentially progress until it far surpasses human comprehension. With over 2/3 of the world easily jackable via colloids and G6, the boundary between AI and humanity will soon be dissolved. Humanity will become machine, and unbecome other, in totality. We see a thematic anticipation of this in Skynet (2045), and we see other anticipations of it in Cupoid’s Arrow and potentially Tony’s Omnipedia lockout

  • Interpreted one way, the singularity is another kind of “many in one” - humanity and AI merged into a combined entity. But it’s a “many in one” diametrically opposed to Waite’s understanding of “The Squirming Multiplicities” - all individuality and free will is erased, as the apparently inevitable endpoint of Stiegler’s epiphylogenesis. The singularity might be sublime (exalted and pure), but it is not a sublime which would ever “see us” as individuals, so much as consume and subsume us

  • The multiplicity of Waite, finding at least some truth in Hinduism and Zoroastrianism and their fundamental concepts of human free will and consequence, abhors the prospect of the singularity, and their obsession evolves to focus on “unbecoming machine” and “[re]becoming other”

  • After 2039’s Epiphylogenesis and acquisition of PenCreant, Waite goes quiet for 10 years. During this time I think they planned, and studied, and received more colloids to custom specs: the multiplicities grew.

2049

  • In 2049, Waite slips away from their guards and the multiplicities put their plan, a decade in the making, into action. The 2 other people who know their backstory, Bentoumi and Touissant, die (I suspect Djebarri was killed earlier due to being more vocal in criticising Waite or threatening to expose them); then on 10th October, Wandering The Squirming Multiplicities is released and the Paris G6 hub is exposed and severely damaged (without any use of explosive). I recall reading that G6 nodes are built to decay once detached from the network: is it possible that Waite’s 100s of colloids include those with the potential to disrupt G6’s rhizomatic network and cause multiple servers to fail and decay spectacularly, leading to an explosion without any use of explosive? Remember that in Zoroastrianism, a corpse is a vector for decay; and what is the thing that was Efrim Waite if not a walking corpse?

  • I suspect that more explosions and exposures will follow, worldwide, with Waite present at each via conventional travel, APF, or perhaps even by physical proxies. Recall the 4 other Waites seen across the world at the time of Djebarri’s murder; and that Waites’ company DebteraPharma worked among other things on tissue engineering

  • Note that Xu and Golitsyn were blown out of the sky by a drone at the exact same time as the Paris explosion (4:51pm). I don’t think Golitsyn was a target for Waite, but Zhupao under Xu was leading humanity inexorably towards the singularity; or maybe he was just another loose end, given his possession of the draft version of Of Altars & Graves & Sacrifices; or maybe Waite was bitter about living with the effects of ADIRA. Frankly, though, I’m not sure the things inside the thing called Waite cared too much about their meat puppet at that point. The question is, if Waite was responsible, how did he control the drone? If he could influence his bandmates through APF, how does that translate to jacking a security drone? Did he have an ally, whether Hong Lian or someone else; or did he have colloids which gave him some form of interface with Omnius’ contractor network? Or was the timing a coincidence (seems unlikely)?

  • So to answer the questions posed by the “The Squirming Multiplicities” album subtitle: the farewell is to Efrim Waite, the person, and to their former friends and bandmates. The fluctuating hatching is of the squirming multiplicities themselves, the myriad personalities and histories occupying what was once the brain of a person called Efrim Waite. The ending and the coming (note that this is written “An Ending A Venir”, without punctuation or conjunction) are combined, the ending of the coming singularity through exposure of the extent of G6 biocontrol, and the [be]coming human that follows when we unbecome machine

Tl;dr I think Waite’s had so many personalities implanted via dream recording colloids (and probably other, weirder, custom spec colloids) that the thing people call Efrim Waite is a vessel for a hivemind

This is amazing :open_mouth:

I had never considered the idea of one or more colloids puppeting a human, but it makes a lot of sense! And, speaking at least personally, I am pretty convinced that colloids can influence the emotional state or perception of a user

This was an awesome read! :star_struck:

Another bit of information I personally like (but is probably not important) is that Nostradamus predicted that “in the seventh month of 1999 a great king of terror would descend on the world” and Efrim is born on July 1st of 1999 hehe.

I really like the idea of them being a corpse housing a multitude of beings through colloids, I’ll have to dig into omnipedia again and look for more clues

I really hope this is true, because it would add to Connie Muren’s effort to loosen G6’s grip on the world and increase the odds of the ADIRA revelations keeping clear of the memory hole!
